Vintage Wedding Finds: How to Repurpose Antique Treasures for Your Big Day

Attending Canton's First Monday Trade Days has always been one of my favorite things to do since I was a kid. When we built Cornerstone Ranch Events Center in 2014, I knew we had to make a trip down south to gather unique new and old finds. We ended up coming home with a trailer full of treasures, that all blended perfectly in our rustic barn venue. Every trip is an adventure, as I sift through hundreds of booths filled with everything from rustic furniture to vintage glassware, one-of-a-kind decor, and charming antiques. It's always exciting to find pieces that perfectly complement the rustic and warm vibe of our venue. Whether it’s a weathered wooden sign, a vintage chandelier, or a pink antique couch, these treasures help give Cornerstone Ranch Events Center a personal and timeless feel that our couples love. There’s something so special about mixing old-world charm with modern touches, and Canton always delivers the perfect finds to make our venue even more magical for each wedding and event. Read on to see why vintage wedding decor is trending and why you need to go antique shopping for your big day!

Why Choose Vintage Wedding Decor?

The beauty of choosing vintage wedding decor is that it tells a story. Each item has a history, and by incorporating it into your wedding, you're adding layers of personality and depth to your celebration. Plus, buying vintage is a sustainable choice, giving new life to items that might otherwise be forgotten. Whether you're aiming for a rustic, boho, or classic vibe, you can find something that fits your style while also being eco-friendly.

What to Look for at Antique Stores and Flea Markets

When you step into an antique store or flea market, or First Monday Trade days, it can feel like a bit of a treasure hunt. But the possibilities are endless! Here are some items you can keep an eye out for:

  • Vintage Glassware: Old glass bottles, wine glasses, or goblets can make a stunning display at your reception. Whether you use them for centerpieces, a bar area, or as decor, vintage glass adds a touch of elegance and a bit of history.

  • Old Picture Frames: These can be easily repurposed for wedding signs, seating charts, or photos. Spray paint them in your wedding colors for a fresh look, or leave them as-is for an antique vibe.

  • Weathered Wooden Crates: Perfect for creating rustic displays for flowers, candles, or even as part of your dessert table. Stack them in different sizes for visual interest.

  • Lace or Vintage Fabric: Beautiful fabrics can be used in so many ways, from table runners and chair sashes to custom wedding signage or even your bridal bouquet wrap.

  • Candles and Candle Holders: Antique brass or silver candle holders can add a touch of old-world charm to your reception tables, and mismatched candles create a cozy, romantic atmosphere.

  • Chandeliers: Look for vintage chandeliers that can be repurposed for your venue. Even smaller, elegant light fixtures can add a dreamy touch to your ceremony or rustic reception space.

Upscaling Thrift Store Finds for Your Wedding

One of the best things about thrift stores is that you can often find items that just need a little love and care to be transformed into something beautiful. Here are some simple ways to upscale thrift store finds for your wedding:

  • DIY Makeovers: A little paint goes a long way! For example, old wooden crates can be stained or painted to match your wedding color scheme. Vintage picture frames can be spray-painted in gold or silver for a more polished, cohesive look.

  • Distressed Furniture: Find old chairs, tables, or even a vintage ladder to use in your decor. With a fresh coat of paint or a bit of distressing, they can be turned into beautiful statement pieces for your reception.

  • Mix and Match: Don’t be afraid to mix and match items that seem to have little in common. Mismatched vintage chairs can create an eclectic and fun vibe, while mismatched china or glassware can add a charming, rustic feel.

  • Personalization: Add your personal touch to vintage finds with custom labels, signs, or embellishments. Antique mirrors can become custom signs for the ceremony or reception, and old trunks can hold your gifts or favors.

Tips for Shopping at Antique and Thrift Stores

If you’re new to antique and thrift shopping, here are a few tips to help you make the most of your visit:

  1. Know Your Wedding Style: It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the options, so it helps to know what you're looking for. Whether you’re aiming for rustic charm, boho vibes, or vintage glamour, stick to items that fit your theme.

  2. Be Patient: Finding the perfect items can take time, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t find everything you need on the first trip. You might have to visit multiple stores or go back a few times to find the right pieces.

  3. Check for Condition: Make sure the items are in good condition and can be easily cleaned or restored if needed. Sometimes a little TLC is all an item needs to become a wedding showstopper!

  4. Don’t Forget About Local Shops: Sometimes the best finds are in smaller, local shops or flea markets that aren’t always on the radar. Be sure to check out nearby antique malls, estate sales, and thrift shops in your area.

  5. Ask for Discounts: Some shops may be open to offering discounts, especially if you’re buying in bulk or purchasing multiple items. It never hurts to ask!
